Hike at Soldier’s Delight Natural Environment Area
10/19/24
We walked the ~3.5 mile loop at Soldier’s Delight and enjoyed the fall colors!
The visitor center has multiple snakes (i.e., Black Rat snake, Corn snake) and turtles (i.e., Red Eared Sliders, Stinkpot turtle, Spotted turtle, Wood turtle, Eastern box turtle, and Diamondback turtle!) on display in their terrariums. The majority of their reptiles are confiscated pets that now are properly taken care of and used to educate people against removing wildlife from their natural habitats. They additionally have a small aviary that is home to a very friendly raven, a talkative owl, and adorable turkey vulture.
We also were lucky to find a Greater Fringed Gentian flower still blooming! This flower is quite rare in Maryland with Soldier’s Delight NEA being one of few locations it can be spotted.
